Any organization recognized as "exempt" by the IRS (U.S.) or CRA (Canadian Qualified Donee status) can apply to receive in-kind donations from companies in the DonationMatch network.
For the protection of nonprofit organizations and donor companies alike, potential recipients of donations undergo a verification process prior to having their accounts enabled. Information that is verified includes:
- The organization is recognized as federally exempt
- The account holder is associated with and/or an authorized contact to solicit donations on behalf of the organization
- Information about the entity can be found on a website or web page
Suppose that these cannot be confirmed through public records, documents provided, or the organization's website. In that case, a request for additional information will be sent to the account holder/contact, typically within 0-2 business days.
What are the most common reasons a Nonprofit account is not enabled?
Federal exempt status/Tax ID:
- Exempt status was revoked, typically for failure to file tax returns
- Not yet applied or recognized by IRS or CRA as exempt
- Not a qualifying entity type--for-profit or not a Qualified Donee (in Canada)
- Federal Tax ID/EIN/BN could not be found or verified
- Personal ask
Account holder:
- The email address does not belong to the organization
- The email address is not found on the organization's website
- Contact is not known by organization leaders
- Contact is known but not authorized to solicit donations
- No response to verification emails sent to the organization
- Third-party fundraisers prohibited from using the organization's Tax ID to solicit in-kind donations
Website:
- A website does not exist/Facebook Page only
- Organization name and information not found on the URL submitted (most often with associated/supporting organizations that are separate legal entities of schools, teams, etc.)
