An NTEE Code is assigned by the IRS based on information supplied with an organization's Form 1023 when applying to be recognized as exempt. NTEE Codes assigned to a particular organization may be found through some publicly accessible databases. DonationMatch uses a combination of Guidestar, Propublica, IRS Exempt Organization Search, and others for accuracy.
More information regarding exact categories can be found here:

An organization that is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) church or religion-associated organization, with a religious basis for exempt status and not required to file annual returns, will have an NTEE of "X - Religious" within the DonationMatch system, as religion is the basis of the organization's exempt status.
If your organization has updated its mission and feels a need to correct its NTEE Code(s), we encourage you to reach out to the IRS and apply for a change of NTEE. The DonationMatch profile record can be updated when this is approved by forwarding a copy of your confirmed NTEE change letter from the IRS to nonprofitsupport@donationmatch.com
